10 best podcasts for kids

When we think of podcasts, our minds usually think of adult related content like True Crime which has been increasingly popular over the last few years.

Many times we think of kids being these little bundles of energy, and sitting quietly listening to a podcast does not generally fit into that picture.

However, there are many podcasts perfectly curated to young children, from stories, to “How does it work” types of pods that should keep your kids entertained for hours, whether it be a road trip, or just having some entertainment time that does not involve screens.

Below you will find some podcasts that should grab the attention of your young one.

Story Pirates

Story Pirates works on the premise that the kids actually send in their own ideas and characters. This would be amazing if your kid could hear their own ideas performed by some voices that they might recognize. The stories are slightly polished before they are actually performed, but this is just to make sure they are easy to digest by young ears and actually make sense (we all know how young ones can ramble in nonsensical ways). Although a lot of the performances are done by well-known comics, there have been a few guests which would truly blow your socks off. This includes Julie Andrews from Mary Poppins fame as well as Lin-Manual Miranda who gave us such amazing works like Moana and Encanto.

Unspookable

If you have a kid that loves Halloween and all things scary, this podcast might be just the thing for you. Offering family-friendly retellings of popular urban legends, scary stories and myths. This is the perfect platform for horror fans in training without actually delving into the realm that will truly keep them up at night (a few of them might still ask to sleep with the night light on). Do keep this into consideration if you have young ones that scare easily or do not like the creepy and macabre.

Five Minutes with Dad

“Five Minutes with Dad” is a podcast where a father and his two kids tackle everyday issues. This includes things like staying positive in school, losing a tooth and showing appreciation for your relatives. We all know that over the past decade family dynamics has changed drastically, and this pod would be ideal for single-parent situations or other challenging family dynamics where having these types of conversations are not always possible or even if you as a parent are not sure how to explain certain situations. Please keep in mind that despite the name, the episodes tend to be closer to 20 minutes.

Brains On!

If you have widely curious kiddos that are starting to ask questions that you just do not have the answers for, this is the podcast for you. Every week they get experts to answer those questions that the normal everyday parent just won’t have the answers to. Does your child have questions about whether the multiverse exists? Well great news, this has already been covered on this show. No questions are too big for this podcast to tackle and your curious child is sure to get a kick out of the explanations provided to those wild and wacky questions.

Story Time

Are you running out of stories to tell or read at bedtime? Not to worry, Story Time podcast to the rescue. This is the flagship podcast on Bedtime FM and consists of 20-minute long episodes that tell a simple and unique story. The absolute nice thing about the platform is that it has been divided into age brackets. So if your kiddo grows bored of a certain kind of story because they are maturing, you can move up an age bracket. These brackets start at pre-school and go all the way up to preteen.

Book Club for Kids

This biweekly podcast is perfect for those kids that always have their nose stuck in a book and are constantly getting into trouble for reading way after they should have been in bed. Here they can listen to other kids chat about the stories while also giving other recommendations of books they can get stuck on. They often have celebrity guests on the show as well that will read excerpts from the week’s chosen book. This is targeted at tweens between the ages of 8 and 12.

Chompers

If your kids are anything like mine, you know that getting them to brush their teeth for the full two minutes is a hassle. Why not make it fun? This twice-daily podcast tries to do exactly that. It provides two minutes of content, which varies every time so that it does not get repetitive. The idea is that the kiddo will be listening and brushing their teeth for the entire time the podcast is playing. I am definitely giving this a shot tonight before bedtime.

Greeking Out

This podcast from National Geographic retells Greek myths in a kiddo friendly way. They have also branched out into other myths like Loki from the Norse mythology, but the main focus still remains Greek. If your kids already know these myths from other sources, they might notice how there are some slight variations as to how these stories are presented. This could be a good conversation starter as to how stories can evolve and change over time. I would highly recommend this for kiddos who already have a love for these stories or even if you yourself love these and would like your kids to learn about the mythology.

Fierce Girls

A perfect platform for empowering young girls. This podcast tells the true stories of women, from athletes to spies. It is Australian based, so if you are from other parts of the world, just keep this in mind. All stories are age appropriate and nothing too gory and graphic is described, this being said, the hosts do like to tell it like it is, so if you are concerned that your kiddo might not be mature enough to handle certain ones, maybe give it a listen yourself.

Saturday Morning Cereal Bowl

This podcast does not have any stories, this is a 2-hour long music show. Now, before you think that it is just more Baby Shark and the like, that is not actually the case. These playlists are curated with songs that kids will like, that are not necessarily kids songs. It is a bunch of Indie artists, but the occasional well-known artists are in there too. Perfect for long drives, kids parties or just rocking out to some great tunes as a family.
